Dr. Kim's career began with foundational educational training, receiving an AB in biology from Harvard University and an MD from the Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine. He then completed a residency in general pediatrics at Tufts Medical Center and fellowship training in pediatric gastroenterology and hepatology at the University of California San Francisco Benioff Children's Hospitals. He received board certification from the American Board of Pediatrics and further expanded his expertise in clinical development by completing a certification in design and interpretation of clinical trials from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, as well as an immersion course in drug discovery, development, and regulation at the Stanford Center of Excellence in Regulatory Science and Innovation (CERSI), in collaboration with the University of California, San Francisco.

Dr. Kim's professional development has been driven by a desire to improve the lives of patients suffering from chronic autoimmune diseases, where the body's immune system abnormally attacks itself, and a curiosity for understanding the scientific mechanisms of these diseases.
Dr. Kim's basic scientific research has included better understanding molecular and cellular mechanisms of diseases such as multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes, and autoimmune and inflammatory diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and liver. Dr. Kim pursued medical training in order to better understand the experience of patients suffering from these diseases and how best to treat them with currently available therapies. After fellowship training and prior to joining Kyverna Therapeutics, Dr. Kim began his career in the biopharmaceutical industry, serving as the associate medical director of clinical development at Sonoma Biotherapeutics from 2022 to 2023. Continuing as medical director at Kyverna Therapeutics, Dr. Kim has found immense gratification transitioning to a career in early-stage clinical development, where he has been able to combine his passions of scientific discovery and service to others as part of a team of like-minded experts committed to addressing the current unmet needs of patients with autoimmune diseases. With a continuing focus on advancing the understanding of autoimmune diseases and developing new therapies, his career will continue to be built on translating scientific discoveries into practical treatments to improve the lives of the communities he serves.

He was awarded the National Leadership Award by the American Medical Association Foundation, and his research during clinical and postdoctoral fellowship was funded by a T32 grant from the National Institutes of Health.
